In early June, a few days after final exams, our team of 8 St. Paul’s School students will depart from campus in Concord, NH to fly to Washington State to begin a 46 day, 3,400 mile bicycle journey across the United States.  We are volunteering this time to raise funds for and awareness about wounded U.S. soldiers.  Through this journey, we have set a challenging yet attainable goal to raise $100,000 for Ride 2 Recovery.

Ride 2 Recovery is a nonprofit program that supports mental and physical rehabilitation programs for wounded U.S. veterans and features cycling as the core activity. Its mission is to improve the health and wellness of wounded vets in Spinning Recovery Labs at Military and VA locations, and to support the vets in numerous outdoor cycling events around the US. Over 90% of each dollar donated to R2R goes directly to helping wounded soldiers.

One of the biggest concerns of our country is treating the mental and physical issues our troops face upon returning home. We owe them a debt of gratitude and that includes providing the best possible treatment and care. Ride 2 Recovery incorporates cycling as a part of that treatment. Cycling has proven to be extremely effective not only in the rehabilitation of physical injuries, but also mental injuries (such as PTSD or TBI). Since it’s inception, Ride 2 Recovery has helped thousands of veterans who have in turn pedaled thousands of miles on their own road to recovery.

As we cross the country, we look forward to meeting veterans along the route, to spreading awareness of Ride2Recovery’s mission and to seeing much of the beauty the United States has to offer.  We know from stories shared by SPS students who have cycled before us, that we will face many challenges and sore muscles along the route, but we will be greatly rewarded with wonderful, life changing memories and the satisfaction of helping our country’s veterans.  By undertaking this trip, our team will continue in the tradition of many St. Paul’s School alumni who have pedaled cross country for various charities over the years.  Our team thanks these alumni and their families for their inspiration, support, and shared knowledge.

We will arrive on the Atlantic Coast in late July with thousands of miles under our wheels, and a sense of accomplishment, having spread awareness of this remarkable program. Without your help, it would not be possible. Please join us in supporting our veterans and Ride to Recovery.
